Vividrin acute eye drops


Vividrin® eye drops is a drug that is used to treat allergy-related symptoms in the eye. Most often, the drug is used because of hay fever, which is associated with conjunctivitis. Vividrin® eye drops should be taken regularly at fixed times to prevent symptoms from developing.

They are less suitable for alleviating symptoms that are already beginning. Compared to some other drugs against allergies, the active ingredient is generally well tolerated and rarely leads to side effects. Vividrin® eye drops have no effect on non-allergic symptoms such as inflammatory conjunctivitis and should therefore not be used.

Indications for Vividrin acute eye drops

The indications for Vividrin® eye drops are acute and chronic conjunctivitis caused by allergies. The drug is most often used to treat symptoms in the eyes of hay fever or spring conjunctivitis. The Vividrin® eye drops should be taken regularly and preventively and not just when symptoms are already occurring.

Symptoms such as inflamed, watery eyes, itching, eyelid swelling and increased sensitivity to light are possible indications, provided that these are allergic. In addition to the seasonal forms of allergy already mentioned, the drug can also be used for allergies that can occur throughout the year, such as house dust, mold or animal hair allergies. Vividrin® eye drops are not indicated for acute, severe allergy symptoms.

Hay fever is probably the most common area of ​​application for Vividrin® eye drops. This allergy-related disease causes discomfort to the eyes and nose when the responsible pollen is distributed through the air. Therefore, symptoms due to hay fever are typically limited to a few months of the year (usually in spring).

If used regularly, Vividrin® eye drops can prevent allergy symptoms in the case of hay fever in the eyes, or at least make them less pronounced. The drug can usually be used over the entire pollen season. In the case of very severe forms, however, such treatment is usually not sufficient and other drugs in the form of tablets must be used to control the symptoms.

Red eyes

Red eye is a symptom that can have several different causes. Among other things, it can occur due to an allergic reaction to grasses, pollen, or house dust. If the cause of red eyes is allergic, treatment with Vividrin® eye drops can be carried out. However, these are primarily suitable for preventing symptoms of a known allergy, for example when the allergy-causing plants start to bloom.

Other typical symptoms of allergic red eyes are sneezing attacks, runny nose and itching of the eyes. In addition, an allergy often already exists from childhood, but can sometimes only appear in adulthood. If the symptom of red eyes occurs, it is therefore advisable to consult a doctor. It may be an infectious conjunctivitis that must be treated differently than with Vividrin® eye drops.

Medicines other than Vividrin® eye drops should also be used for acute allergy-related eye complaints.

The active ingredient in Vividrin® eye drops is called sodium cromoglicate and is better known as cromoglicic acid. The effect takes place by inhibiting the release of an endogenous messenger substance that is responsible for the symptoms of an excessive reaction of the immune system that is typical of an allergy.

Without the effects of the drug, if the conjunctiva of the eye comes into contact with the responsible allergen such as pollen or house dust (mite excrement) via air, histamine is released from the so-called mast cells. This triggers a local inflammatory reaction with which the body tries to fight off the apparently dangerous particles.

This manifests itself in the eye as redness, itching and increased sensitivity to light. Vividrin® eye drops and the cromoglicic acid they contain stabilize the shell of special immune cells (mast cells) in the eye and thus prevent excessive release of histamine with the consequences described above upon contact with the allergen. However, the effect can only take place if the Vividrin® eye drops are used regularly and preventively.

If there has already been a release of histamine and the resulting symptoms of an allergic reaction, the symptoms can only be relieved slightly by Vividrin® eye drops. In addition, the drops only work on the eyes. Symptoms such as the urge to sneeze or runny nose cannot be influenced by using Vividrin® eye drops.

side effect

In the vast majority of cases, there are no side effects to fear when using Vividrin® eye drops, even if they are used over a long period of time. Only in rare cases, i.e. less than one in 1,000 cases, are symptoms such as burning eyes, conjunctival swelling and a foreign body sensation triggered. This can also lead to increased tearing and a feeling of warmth in the eye.

A skin rash is also possible in rare cases. If you notice such side effects, you should stop using Vividrin® eye drops and consult a doctor. The same applies to the very rare side effects, which affect less than one in 10,000 users. In individual cases, for example, after treatment with other drugs containing the same active ingredient as Vividrin® eye drops, hypersensitivity reactions have been reported, which can be expressed as shortness of breath due to narrowing of the airways.

However, triggering this extremely rare side effect through proper use on the eye is virtually impossible.


There are no known interactions between Vividrin® eye drops and other drugs. However, a doctor should be consulted if other eye drops are also used. If necessary, there should be a certain time interval between the individual applications.

Contraindications - When should Vividrin acute eye drops not be given?

There are not many contra-indications that Vividrin® eye drops should not be used. Only if there is an over-susceptibility to the active ingredient sodium cromoglicate or one of the additives contained in the drug, this must not be used under any circumstances. There is also a relative counter-sign in children who have not yet reached the age of five.

In exceptional cases, Vividrin® eye drops can also be used on younger children after consulting a pediatrician. Caution is also advised in the event of impaired kidney or liver function. Severe impairment of one of these organs can also be a counter-sign against Vividrin® eye drops. Vividrin® eye drops must also no longer be used if the best-before date has been exceeded.

Can I use Vividrin eye drops with contact lenses?

It is generally not advisable to wear contact lenses when using Vividrin® eye drops. In the case of soft contact lenses in particular, there is a risk that the preservatives contained in the eye drops will be deposited in the lenses and thus irritate the eyes. This is not to be feared with hard contact lenses.

However, if in doubt, you should consult an ophthalmologist. If they approve the use of contact lenses while being treated with Vividrin® eye drops. However, the lenses should be removed from the eyes before use and replaced 15 minutes later at the earliest.


The dosage of Vividrin® eye drops is based on the amount of drops applied to the eye. Adults and children should use the medicine four times a day at fixed intervals. One drop per eye is placed in the conjunctival sac. It is best to do this in front of the mirror at the beginning or have a second person help you.

If necessary, the dosage can be increased by increasing the frequency of use to one drop per eye six times a day. If the symptoms no longer occur, longer dosing intervals can be tried again. Even if there are no known signs of overdose, Vividrin® eye drops should not be used more than eight times a day and never more than one drop should be placed in one eye at a time.


The price for a bottle of Vividrin® eye drops is between three and five euros. You can often find lower prices at Internet pharmacies, whereby the costs are usually higher than if you buy the drug in a local pharmacy because of the shipping costs. It is also worth paying attention to offers and comparing prices.

Alternatives to Vividrin acute eye drops

The product Vividrin® EDO eye drops is an alternative to Vividrin® eye drops from a bottle. The individual doses of this product are packed in separate ampoules. Since these are no longer used after opening, they do not contain any preservatives in contrast to Vividrin® eye drops from the bottle.

The eye drops from the ampoule therefore represent an alternative for contact lens wearers, because preservatives can be deposited in soft contact lenses. There are also drugs that contain the same active ingredient as Vividrin® eye drops in tablet form. Other alternatives are drugs that can be used in other ways to treat allergic symptoms to the eye.

Can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

The use of Vividrin® eye drops during pregnancy or other drugs with the same active ingredient has been investigated in several scientific studies in a large number of women. There was no harmful effect on the child's development. This applies to all stages of pregnancy that were each examined separately. Therefore it is possible to take Vividrin® eye drops during pregnancy.

Since the active ingredient only works on the eye anyway and is hardly absorbed into the bloodstream, it is released into breast milk so little that the drug can also be used during breastfeeding. In any case, the active ingredient of Vividrin® eye drops disintegrates in a short time, so that an effective dose would not reach the child either during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Effectiveness of the pill

With its active ingredient and the additives it contains, Vividrin® eye drops in no way affect the effectiveness of the pill. In contrast to drugs in tablet form, Vividrin® eye drops only work directly on the eye. The active ingredient is only absorbed into the bloodstream to a very small extent, where it breaks down in a short time. Therefore, the way the sex hormones in the pill work is not affected by this drug.

Even with all other forms of contraception, the use of Vividrin® eye drops does not change the effectiveness.
