cold
Cold applications are mainly used for tendinitis at the beginning of the symptoms. When it is cold, the blood vessels in the cooled part of the body are made very narrow, so that fewer messenger substances from the body reach the affected tendon. This prevents an excessive release of inflammatory mediators and substances that send a pain signal to the brain. This slows down the inflammation and at the same time provides pain relief. Due to the reduced blood flow, little fluid reaches the affected area, so that swelling is prevented.
Cold packs and ice packs as well as curd and cabbage wraps can be used as cold applications. A cold water bath is also possible, depending on where the tendons are affected.
Appointment with a sports orthopedic specialist?
I would be happy to advise you!
Who am I?
My name is dr. Nicolas Gumpert. I am a specialist in orthopedics and the founder of .
Various television programs and print media report regularly about my work. On HR television you can see me every 6 weeks live on "Hallo Hessen".
As a passionate athlete, I have specialized in the treatment of sports diseases for professionals and hobby athletes.
The focus is therefore on diseases of the muscles, tendons and joints.
In order to be able to treat successfully in orthopedics, a thorough examination, diagnosis and a medical history are required.
In our very economic world in particular, there is too little time to thoroughly grasp the complex diseases of orthopedics and thus initiate targeted treatment.
I don't want to join the ranks of "quick knife pullers".
The aim of any treatment is treatment without surgery.
Which therapy achieves the best results in the long term can only be determined after looking at all of the information (Examination, X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, etc.) be assessed.

Quark wrap
Quark wraps are one of the typical home remedies that are used for pain and inflammation. To make a quark wrap, conventional quark from the refrigerator (refrigerator temperature) is placed on kitchen paper. Then you wait until the kitchen towel has soaked up the quark. The moist quark wrap is placed on the inflamed tendon and, if necessary, fixed with another kitchen towel or something similar. The compress can usually remain on the skin for around 20 minutes before it loses its cooling effect. Due to the moisture, quark wraps do not have to be as cold as ice packs for a comparable cooling effect. This protects the skin from frostbite, especially on the surface.
warmth
Warming home remedies are usually only suitable after a few days to weeks for tendinitis. First of all, the acute inflammatory process has to be suppressed by the cold. After that, however, the tendon can regenerate best when the highest possible metabolic activity and therefore particularly good blood flow to the tendon and the associated muscle takes place. This body's own regeneration is particularly well supported by the application of heat.
To do this, a hot water bottle can be placed on the affected muscle. Many ice packs can also be heated. The heat applications can be combined with massages if required.
Horse ointment
The horse ointment was developed for the muscles of racehorses, only later did humans use this ointment. It is composed of several components, all of which can have a positive effect on tendinitis.
- The menthol part has a cooling effect.
- Arnica counteracts the pain of tendinitis.
- Rosemary and camphor have a warming and blood circulation-promoting effect.
Due to these diverse mechanisms of action, the horse ointment is a home remedy that can be used at any time of the tendinitis.
Retterspitz
Retterspitz is a trade name for a specific medicinal liquid that was developed by Margarete Retterspitz. It can be used internally as well as externally. In the case of tendinitis, external application plays a major role.
Retterspitz contains thymol as an anti-inflammatory agent, rosemary is used to promote blood circulation. Retterspitz also contains the pain-relieving active ingredient arnica. Retterspitz works best when it is left on overnight in the form of Retterspitz wraps.
Arnica tincture
Arnica is a medicinal plant that occurs mainly in the European mountain regions. Essential oils can be obtained from the flowers, which have an analgesic and antiseptic (anti-inflammatory) effect. As a rule, arnica is used externally, mostly alcohol-based tinctures are used for this. More rarely, arnica is also used as a mixture with water. Due to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, arnica is a valuable home remedy, especially in the first few days of tendinitis.
Later you should use warming and blood circulation-enhancing preparations.
rosemary
Rosemary is used in various forms for treating tendinitis. Basically, the healing effect of rosemary is based on an increase in blood flow, which stimulates the metabolic activity in the muscles. This helps the body fight the small defects in the tendon more quickly and thus heal the tendinitis faster. Rosemary can be applied topically to the affected area of the body as a tincture or ointment. It can also be used as a bath additive.
Healing earth
Healing clay can be used for pain relief in tendinitis. The use of red or green healing earth is recommended. You mix the healing earth with lukewarm water to make a paste. This is applied to the painful part of the body for 20 to 30 minutes. One or two applications a week is usually sufficient to reduce the symptoms.
If you want to let additional active ingredients work with the healing earth, you can mix the earth with infusions of medicinal herbs instead of normal water and then apply it.
Caraway seed oil
Caraway seed oil is another home remedy that has an inflammatory and pain relieving and cooling effect on tendinitis. Ideally, it is used alongside therapy. Although only about 1% of caraway seed oil consists of essential oils, when used topically, the dose is sufficient for an anti-inflammatory effect. Caraway oil draws heat from the body through its moisture alone. The cooling effect is triggered by the evaporation of the liquid.
