Conduct during radiation therapy
Depending on the area of the body being irradiated, some measures should be taken possible side effects to alleviate or to prevent.
In general, the skin manipulate as little as possible in the areas in which radiation is taking place. Some clinics have a general ban on washing during the therapy period. Ultimately has clear water and a perfume free soap however no negative influence on possible skin reactions. In general, follow the recommendations given by your therapy facility. It is beneficial to use inactive powders. On the one hand, the powder cools the skin and is therefore pleasant. On the other hand, the sweat is absorbed by the powder and prevents the markings from being smeared through clothing.
If stronger skin reactions occur in the course of therapy, further measures are required (e.g. disinfecting solutions, ointments, etc.)
Throat, nose, ears
The lining of the mouth and throat is very sensitive. Radiation therapy in this region often leads to inflammation and painful swallowing difficulties. Bacteria and fungi are happy to settle and aggravate the symptoms.
This problem can be prevented through meticulous oral hygiene with disinfecting mouth rinses (e.g. iodine solutions). To prevent radiation caries, a dental restoration is carried out as far as possible before the start of therapy. Previously damaged teeth are removed if they cannot be finally treated with small fillings.
Radiation in the chest area
In the case of lung tumors or esophageal tumors, the mucous membrane of the esophagus is stressed by the radiation. This can lead to painful swallowing difficulties during the course of therapy.
Abdominal / pelvic area
If the stomach is in the radiation field, nausea can occur. The lining of the intestine reacts with duchfall and the bladder can develop symptoms of cystitis. This means that you have to urinate more often than usual and you may feel a burning sensation when urinating.
If you experience such symptoms, you must immediately inform your doctor treating you so that the appropriate measures can be initiated.
